"Sew Saturday" at Calico Kate
My "Sew Saturday" project this year is to support
The Romanian Aid Foundation
(UK Registered Charity No. 1060828).
We all remember the terrible pictures of the children in Romanian Orphanages, back in 1990. Now those children are adults, and many are scarred by the neglect they suffered, and still need help.
"Joy in a Box" is an opportunity for people here to send a small parcel of gifts to needy families and individuals in Romania. Your boxes will be taken to Romania and fairly distributed by an experienced team, to bring joy at Christmas.
My aim is to fill 70 shoe boxes with gifts for their children (guess who is 70 this year!) With so many inspirations and patterns produced by Sew Magazine over the last year, there is lots to choose from.
My mother taught me to sew: what a wonderful gift she passed on to me. Without that gift there would be no "Calico Kate"!
With this in mind, I am also putting a call out to see if anyone has a sewing machine that is still in working order/or just needs a little tweaking to get it going again. perhaps tucked away in a cupboard and not not used since you replaced it with a super duper one. Romania would love to have it.
A very dear friend, Richard Burgess, is one of the volunteers, and has so far made around 90 aid trips to Romania, taking much-needed essentials. Along with other volunteers, he is presently building homes in the Dorohoi region of northeastern Romania, near the borders with Ukraine and Moldova.
To mark his 70th birthday he requested no gifts but, if friends wished, a donation to help build lives and homes in Romania. It was his generosity of spirit, time and resources, that prompted me to choose this way to celebrate my birthday. My gift to him was a Janome sewing machine, and this gave a young Romanian woman the chance to earn a living sewing.
To celebrate my birthday I shall be donating another Janome Sewing Machine and seventy teddy bears! ... so please join me and sew, knit or crochet something for Romania.'Joy in a Box' gift box contents labels will be available in the shop, but can also be downloaded and printed from this link.
(Further information about other events will be on my website closer to Sew Saturday)
