Saint Nicholas, the inspiration for Santa Claus, once helped a poor man who couldn't afford dowries for his three daughters. As the story goes, St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of gold through the man's window, and one of the bags landed in a stocking hung by the fireplace to dry.
